The BP Smoothie I Have Most Mornings
Blood pressure responds to what you eat, and breakfast is an easy place to start. This is the smoothie I make most mornings: a banana, a big handful of frozen mixed berries, and enough milk to blend it smooth. It's cheap, takes about thirty seconds, and it's good for blood pressure.
Why it's good for blood pressure
Two things push blood pressure up: too much salt and too much processed food. The things that help are potassium, fibre, and plenty of plants. This smoothie has the good stuff and almost none of the bad.
The banana gives you potassium, which helps your body get rid of extra salt. The berries add fibre and plant compounds that are good for your blood vessels, with barely any sugar or salt. And because it's sweet and filling, I'm not tempted to grab something salty and processed instead.
To be clear, a smoothie isn't a cure. It won't fix a bad diet, and it's no substitute for checking your numbers and talking to a doctor. It's just one small, easy habit that helps.
Adding whey for protein
Lately I've been adding a scoop of whey protein, which makes it a protein smoothie too. It does two things.
First, it makes it more filling, so I'm not hungry and snacking on salty food by mid-morning. Second, protein helps you keep muscle, which matters more as you get older. A filling, low-salt, high-protein breakfast covers a lot at once.
That's it. No superfood, no long list of ingredients. A quick, cheap smoothie that's good for my blood pressure and now gives me protein too.
