The Banana Berry Smoothie I Have Most Mornings
Not every longevity post has to be about VO2 max or compound interest. Sometimes it's just breakfast. So here's a small one: the smoothie I end up making most mornings, and the little tweak I've added lately that made it better.
It couldn't be simpler — a banana, a big handful of frozen mixed berries, and enough milk to blend it smooth. That's the whole thing. Thirty seconds, one cup to wash, done.
Why this combo
I didn't land on it because of any clever science — I landed on it because it tastes great and I actually look forward to it. But the more I looked, the more I realised it quietly does a lot of good.
The banana gives it the sweetness and creaminess, plus a good hit of potassium — which, as someone keeping half an eye on my blood pressure, I'm more than happy about. The berries are the real workhorses: loads of colour, which usually means loads of the antioxidant-type compounds, plus fibre, and not much sugar for how sweet they make it. Frozen ones are cheaper than fresh, last forever, and make the whole thing thick and cold like a treat rather than a health chore.
The upgrade: a scoop of whey
The change I've made recently is throwing in a scoop of whey protein, and honestly it's been the best tweak. Two reasons.
First, it makes it noticeably richer and more filling — it turns a nice drink into something that actually holds me over for hours instead of leaving me hungry an hour later. Second, protein is one of those things most of us don't get enough of, and it matters more the older you get — it's what your body uses to hold onto muscle. Given a Strong Body is one of the pillars I care about, sneaking easy protein into a drink I'm having anyway is a no-brainer.
That's it. No secret superfood, no ten-ingredient recipe. Just a cheap, quick smoothie that tastes like dessert and happens to look after a few things at once. Sometimes the useful stuff really is that simple.
